Looking at the consumption pattern of eggs, fish and meat in India

NSS Report No.558: Household Consumption of various Goods and Services in India 2011-12 provides data on Monthly per capita quantity of consumption and incidence of consumption of food items in Egg, fish and meat group. The incidence of consumption of at least one food items in Egg, fish and meat group is 54.9% (R)/55% (U) households at the national level. The items in meat include beef, pork, chicken and others: birds, crab, etc. The incidence of consumption of at least one food items in Egg, fish and meat group is more than 90 % in Rural areas in all eight North- Eastern States except Sikkim, West Bengal and Kerala; between 75% and 90% in Goa and Andhra Pradesh; between 50% and 75% in Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar and Jharkhand; between 25% and 50% in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh,  Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh and less than 25% in Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. The monthly incidence of consumption of at least one food items in Egg, fish and meat group is more than 90 % in Urban areas in all eight North Eastern States except Sikkim; between 75% and 90% in  Goa, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim; between 50% and 75% in Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Karnataka and Bihar; between 25% and 50% in Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat; and less than 25% in Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
Eggs are consumed in 29.2% (R)/37.6% (U) households at the national level. 66.7% (R)/64.9% (U) households in Andhra Pradesh, 64.0% (R)/68.7% (U) households in West Bengal, 61.5% (R)/61.6% (U) households in Assam, 55.2% (R)/64.8% (U) households in Goa, 49.8.0% (R)/74.2% (U) households in Mizoram, 55.0% (R)/55.4% (U) households in Kerala and 45.8% (R)/52.3% (U) households in Tamil Nadu consume eggs. Monthly per capita consumption of eggs is 1.94 number (R) / 3.18 number (U) at all India. Top six eggs consuming (in terms Monthly per capita consumption in number) States are Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Tamil Nadu.

Fish is consumed in 26.5% (R)/21% (U) households at the national level. 96.3% (R)/93.3% (U) households in Tripura, 86.8% (R)/79.4% (U) households in Kerala, 83.8% (R)/80.9% (U) households in Goa, and 83.1% (R)/79.2% (U) households in West Bengal and 80.4% (R)/75.0% (U) households in Assam consume fish. Monthly per capita consumption of fish is 0.266 kg (R) / 0.252 kg (U) at all India. Top six fish consuming (in terms Monthly per capita consumption in quantity) States are Kerala, Goa, Tripura, West Bengal, Assam and Odisha.

Chicken is consumed in 21.7% (R)/27% (U) households at the national level. 57.6% (R)/50% (U) households in Andhra Pradesh, 40% (R)/41% (U) households in Tamil Nadu,  36% (R)/36.1% (U) households in Karnataka, 28.5 % (R)/ 38.4% (U) households in Goa, 27.2 % (R)/ 30.8% (U) households in Jammu & Kashmir, 20.4% (R)/23.5% (U) households in Kerala, 28.4% (R)/35.3% (U) households in Assam and 21.2% (R)/37.6% (U) households in West Bengal consume chicken. Monthly per capita consumption of chicken is 0.178 kg (R) / 0.239 kg (U) at all India. Top eight  chicken consuming(in terms Monthly per capita consumption in quantity)  States are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala,  Tamil Nadu, Goa,  Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
While incidence of consumption of Goat meat/ mutton meat 6.4% (R)/10% (U) households at the national level, its incidence is 18.3% (R)/26.4% (U) households in Jammu & Kashmir, 16.1% (R)/15.0% (U) households in Himachal Pradesh,  12.6% (R)/17.3% (U) households in Andhra Pradesh, 11.6% (R)/14.0% (U) households in Maharashtra  11.4% (R)/12.5% (U) households in Tamil Nadu and  7.9% (R)/12% (U) households in Karnataka. Monthly per capita consumption of mutton is 0.049 kg (R) / 0.079 kg (U) at all India. Top six mutton consuming States are Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

The incidence of consumption of beef/buffalo meat is very low across States except North Eastern States (excluding Tripura), Kerala, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.  While incidence of consumption of beef/buffalo meat 4% (R)/5% (U) households at the national level, its incidence is  58.7% (R)/38.0% (U) households in Meghalaya, 38.3% (R)/25.7 % (U) households in Nagaland , 19.5% (R)/22.8 % (U) households in Arunachal Pradesh, 12.3% (R)/25.5% (U) households in Sikkim,  24.7% (R)/8.1% (U) households in Jammu & Kashmir, 13.0% (R)/10.6% (U) households in Kerala , 10.4% (R)/8.1% (U) households in West Bengal and  3.2% (R)/12.7% (U) households in Uttar Pradesh. Monthly per capita consumption of beef is 0.042 kg (R) / 0.064 kg (U) at all India. In the Rural Area, top eight beef consuming States are Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Sikkim, Manipur, and West Bengal. In the Urban Area, top nine beef consuming States are Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Mizoram, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.

The incidence of consumption of Pork is very low across States except North Eastern States. While incidence of consumption of Pork is 1.1% (R)/0.5% (U) households at the national level, its incidence is 66.9% (R)/66.3% (U) households in Nagaland, 48.2% (R)/71.8% (U) households in Mizoram and 37.6% (R)/38.6 % (U) households in Meghalaya.  Monthly per capita consumption of pork is 0.009 kg (R) / 0.006 kg (U) at all India. Top eight pork consuming States are Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur and Assam.
